David Schulman, born 31 October 1881 in Hilversum, was the brother of my second mother Margot and thus he became my uncle.
I remember him as someone who did everything on his bicycle, he used to carry all his painting euipment to the back of his bike. During the period that opa, Lion Schulman lived in our house, that uncle David came to visit him. He came on his bicycle from Laren to Amersfoort. I have fond memories about these visits. |

He was arrested in 1943 and like Willem Willing ended up in the 'strafbarak' of Camp Westerbork.
Fortunately he did not stay there for a long time, since some artist friends of his managed to free him from the camp.
(Joods Historisch Museum: "In WWII David was arrested and spent 3 months in Camp Westerbork. His house and atelier were confiscated by the germans. Thanks to actions of his friends he managed to escape Westerbork." )

The germans did not consider the fact that he was a famous painter, they confiscated his home and lived in it. After the war he returned to his seriously damaged house; especially his atelier was in a bad condition.

Uncle David died on 21 October 1966 in Laren. It was an emotional experience to see his painter's pallet attached to his coffin.... The end of a great painter.

There are many websites that describe his life, his work and his accomplishments. David Schulman painted landscapes, preferable covered in snow, but also portrets and still lifes. He was a member of the associations Arti et Amicitiae, de Gooische Schildersvereniging, St. Lucas, Pulchri Studio in The Hague and the Club van Tien.
